"It’s important these photos were discovered in one of the few remaining public forums we have: the flea market. Like the track, it’s a space built around looking, trading, and sharing information. Movement is metaphorical. The slow oscillation of the crowd among piles of potential treasure is as calm as lake ripples on sand; even the goods themselves seem to vibrate on their own plane, sold, bought and re-sold endlessly, forever unowned. And these photos, too, are as yet unclaimed. We don’t know who took them, but from their very anonymity comes the jewel they represent: a world of our own, in the middle of things, made not to be seen, but for looking, sharing, being." –William Bostwick

Every effort was made to track down the photographer of these images, all taken on Oct. 2, 1982, and discovered at the Alemany Flea Market in the spring of 2025.

Special thanks to Russell, the San Mateo Historical Society, and the "Bay Meadows, Golden Gate Fields, and Nor Cal Fair Memories" Facebook group for their efforts.
